He's an outdoorsman, tall and lean, with an easy smile that reveals his inner warmth.  A mountaineer, he is called, and he once said,  "Climbing solo to perches most people would label risky to capture a bit of wild terrain is never a risk taken for its own sake...to earn those views requires diligence and perceptiveness."  If mountains are half of his inspiration, the other half comes from the master painters who have long since preceded him.  He has and continues to study the Rubens, the Rembrandts, and many of the other "Old Masters."

Born in Los Angeles in 1951, his love of art showed itself at an early age.  He frequently accompanied his parents to area museums, and in school waited impatiently for the 45 minute window set aside each week for drawing and painting.  He started college majoring in finance, but realized his heart wasn't in it.  He discarded the idea of writing and realized that painting was what he, "had to do,"  so he entered Font Bonne College in St. Louis, and earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1973.

"What I am trying to do," he says, "is to capture the people's imagination, not just their attention."  He calls himself a mountaineering painter, but there is much more to Michael, something deeper in this newest "Old Master."
