Anton Weiss

"Born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia and educated at the Villach Institute of Art and Museums, Anton Weiss emigrated to the United States in 1951. Weiss, captured by the avante guarde spirit of abstract expressionism, first settled in New York to study under the critical eye of Jerry Farnsworth of the Art Students League. He then painted with one of the founders of the abstract expressionism movement, Hans Hofmann. Weiss, like Clyfford Still and Willem DeKooning, exploits a gestural approach that emphasizes the act of painting. He learned from Hofmann the importance of tension, the inherent ""push/pull"" between the elements of color and shape, between chaos and order and between viewer and work. Weiss produces stunning works in a variety of media including acrylic on canvas, and paintings on metal and sculpture. Anton lives near Nashville, Tennessee where he was Director of Art at the Watkins Institute (1975-1980). His work is enjoyed in countless public and private collections in the United States and Europe."
