Christian Title

Title, Christian

"Impressionism is the interpretation of form by means of light and shadow. The artist works on a scale which corresponds to these elements and translates the impact on canvas. The actual line and drawing are inconsequential, compared to the eye to the mind. With his acute and sensitive vision, Christian Title induces an emotional response. Growing up in Los Angeles, California, Christian always knew he would be an artist. Having studied commercial are at the Los Angeles Art Center College of Design, his undergraduate studies were continued at Woodbury College until 1952. Feeling the need to expand his artistic horizons, Christian sent a portfolio of drawings and photographs to the BeauxArts Academie in Paris, where he would enroll in 1952. While living in Europe, a great deal of time was spent in the studios of various contemporary masters, including Andre L'Hote, Oskar Kokooschka and Herbert Gaillard. Long periods of studying the master impressionist painters in the galleries of the Jeu de Paume Museum were followed by the sessions of outdoor painting. The work was infused by lessons learned by studying the work of Money and Pissaro, and was successful enough to merit a one-man show at the Rene Drouet Gallery in 1954. After completing a degree at the Beaux-Arts Academie, time was spent painting at the Academie Julean. During this period, Christian was enrolled at the Sorbonne University, where a doctorate was earned in 1955. Extensive immersion in the art of two continents, exposure to important artists, and his own natural talent, were the elements which contributed to create the unique style of Christian Title. In 1956, Christian completed his studies in Europe and returned to the United States. With the influence of two artists in neighboring studios, Paul Gerchik and Milton Gershgoren, the work fostered a much more brilliant palette."
